Surgeons at IKEM transplanted record 542 organs last year

Surgeons from the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) transplanted a record number of organs last year - 542 in total.

A total of 809 organs were transplanted throughout the Czech Republic last year, 44 more year-on-year. IKEM did about 66 percent of all transplants in the Czech Republic.

Institute director Michal Stiborek said the fact that IKEM did not have to dramatically reduce transplant care despite the Covid-19 pandemic was a factor. In 2020, only 495 transplants took place at the institute.
