State school-leaving exams begin across Czechia

State school-leaving exams, known as maturita, began for around 74,000 Czech secondary school students on Monday, May 2. The exams started with written tests either in math or English and will continue on Tuesday with a written test in Czech.

Students can also sit exams in two additional subjects, including another foreign language and a higher level of math. Oral exams, organised by individual schools, are due to take place later in May.

This year, only 17 percent of students allegedly opted for math as optional subject, the rest choosing English. The unified school leaving exam was first introduced in 2011. The Ministry of Education plans to reform system in the near future, introducing two levels of difficulty.
