The world of tennis is currently focused Down Under, with a number of tournaments taking place ahead of the year's first Grand Slam, the Australian Open. The Czech contingent in Australia haven't enjoyed the best few days. Seeded third in Perth's Hopman Cup, the Czech duo of Tomas Berdych and Lucie Safarova - also a couple off-court - were unexpectedly defeated in the first round by India.

Former international Rene Bolf isn't having a happy New Year. Currently a free agent, the 32-year old was considering offers from English clubs. But a knee injury sustained during a kickabout put paid to that: his agent says Bolf will be out for around six months.
Slavia old boys triumph in New Year's day derbies
Here in Prague, the traditional New Year's Day Sparta-Slavia old boys game was won 5:0 by Slavia in the over-35s category. The over 50s match was won 10:5 by Slavia.
