Wimbledon: Berdych, Kvitová reach fourth round

Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych, the No. 7 seed, made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon at the weekend by defeating South African Kevin Anderson. The meeting was their fifth in the 2013 season. Berdych lost the first set but turned things around after that, lifting his game and winning three sets in a row for the victory: 3:6 6:3, 6:4, 7:5 was the final score. Berdych, a finalist at Wimbledon in 2010, faces unseeded Australian Bernard Tomic later on Monday. Also on Monday, Petra Kvitová – the Czech Republic’s top women’s player – will see 4th round action against Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Kvitová reached the fourth round at the weekend by defeating Russian Ekaterina Makarova in a match that had to be temporarily suspended due to rain. Kvitová won by a score of 6:3, 2:6, 6:3.
NHL hockey: Frolík traded to Jets

Forward Michael Frolík who got an assist on the Stanley Cup winning goal last week for Chicago is Canada-bound. The player, who had a year remaining on his contract, will join fellow Czech Ondřej Pavelec with the Winnipeg Jets. He was traded by Chicago in return for the 74th and 134th draft picks. Frolík, who earned 10 points in 45 regular-season games last season and another 10 points in 23 playoff games, was important last year in penalty-killing – an area where the Jets are looking to improve.
Jágr to depart Bruins

On the losing side of the Stanley Cup Finals, Jaromír Jágr will not be back with the Boston Bruins next season, as was reported earlier. The club’s general manager, Peter Chiarelli, confirmed the decision last week. Chiarelli praised the Czech winger and said he had been happy with his game. But Jágr himself joked with reporters that had he scored 20 goals (and not finished 20 short) in the playoffs he might have been back. While Jágr was unable to snap his scoreless streak, he was important in the playoffs on a number of key plays when games went down the wire. The 41-year-old winger is hoping to continue playing in the NHL.
Powell wins men’s 100m in Ostrava

Former world record holder Asafa Powell held on against Kim Collins to win the men’s 100 metres at the Ostrava Golden Spike last week. Powell clocked 10.06 seconds compared to Collins 10.08, while Mike Rodgers of the USA finished 10.16 for third.
The race had had to be re-run after a call back (which was missed by several runners including Powell, who ran it in 9.97 seconds); Cayman Islands' Kemar Hyman was disqualified for a false start.
Jamaican world-record holder Usain Bolt, meanwhile, confirmed he would return for the Golden Spike next year, after being unable to make it to Ostrava this time around.
