South Moravian Agrarian Chamber urges state of emergency due to foot-and-mouth disease
The South Moravian Regional Agrarian Chamber is calling on the government to declare a state of emergency over the threat of foot-and-mouth disease. According to Václav Hlaváček, chairman of the chamber, this would enable more efficient border controls, increase personnel, and implement advanced technical solutions. The risk of the disease spreading from Slovakia is high, potentially causing significant economic damage.
The risk has intensified following a confirmed outbreak in Plavecký Štvrtok, Slovakia, just 50 kilometers from the Czech border. Hlaváček emphasized that strict restrictions are needed to prevent severe damage to Czech farms.
However, the Ministry of Agriculture, led by Minister Marek Výborný, has stated that there is no need to declare an emergency in South Moravia due to foot-and-mouth disease. The government announced that border controls will be strengthened by the deployment of soldiers starting Wednesday.
