Senate group to challenge state of emergency at Constitutional Court

A group of more than 20 senators plan to ask the Constitutional Court to declare the Czech Republic’s current state of emergency unconstitutional. Upper house deputy speaker Jiří Růžička, elected on a TOP 09 and Mayors and Independents ticket, informed Czech Radio of the senators’ intention on Wednesday.

Mr. Růžička said it was insufficient for the government to declare a state of emergency at the request of regional governors alone.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš says the government’s lawyers assured him the step was legitimate.
