Russian gas imports to EU rise 18%, Czechia among key contributors
Russian gas imports to the EU increased by 18% in 2024, despite plans to phase out Russian gas by 2027. The rise was mainly due to higher imports into Italy, Czechia, and France, according to energy think tank Ember.
Gas prices in the EU were 59% higher last year compared to pre-invasion levels. The increase in imports occurred even though energy demand remained stable.
The EU plans to boost LNG import capacity by 54%, despite stable demand until 2030, which Ember warns could lead to unnecessary infrastructure.
