Protesters in Prague oppose Motorists’ getting environment portfolio

Several hundred people gathered on Prague’s Hradčanské Square on Sunday to protest against plans for the Motorists’ party to get the environment portfolio in the next government. Demonstrators warned that the party disputes the scientific consensus on climate change and could cause irreparable damage to Czech nature. They urged President Petr Pavel to reject the party’s nominee for environment minister.

ANO leader Andrej Babiš met with environmental activists on Friday in response to a similar appeal, but made it clear that he could not change the agreed division of portfolios in the emerging government.

Motorists’ leader and likely nominee for environment minister, Petr Macinka, dismissed the protest as an attempt to “rewrite the election results.”
