President Pavel pays homage to American troops killed in South Bohemia in WWII

President Petr Pavel on Saturday paid tribute to the memory of American soldiers killed in Southern Bohemia at the close of World War II. The president visited the memorials to these war heroes in two defunct villages in the Šumava mountains, Zhůří and Gruberg where one of the last battles of WWII took place on 5 and 6 May 1945 . Ten American soldiers of the 90th Infantry Division were killed in clashes with Nazi troops near Zhůří and six US servicemen were wounded in clashes near the village of Prášily.

Mr. Pavel stressed the need to learn the lessons of the past, saying the international community must do everything possible to bring about an end to the senseless fighting in Ukraine and prevent the war from spilling over into Europe.
