President and PM affirm unity on all key foreign policy matters

President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala (SPOLU) on Thursday met to discuss foreign policy issues, primarily the Czech position on Ukraine and the Middle East. The Office of the President later issued a statement saying the head of state and head of government were in consensus on all key foreign policy issues.

In a post on X, Fiala stressed that the alignment on foreign policy is important not only for stability, but in that it provides an advantage for the Czech Republic.

In an interview with the Czech News Agency (ČTK) last week, President Pavel indirectly criticized the government for its staunch backing of Israel saying that while Czechia remains a firm supporter of Israel, it should not shy away from raising sensitive issues with regard to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The prime minister countered that the government had not voiced “unconditional support” for all of  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions and noted that the Czech Republic has joined recent EU and international calls urging Israel to take the humanitarian situation into account.
