Prague Zoo completes record transport of Przewalski's horses to Kazakhstan

Prague Zoo has successfully completed the transport of eight Przewalski's horses to Kazakhstan, according to a statement released on Saturday. Four stallions were flown from Prague earlier this week, while four mares from Berlin Zoo were released into acclimatisation enclosures in the Golden Steppe on Friday.

The transfer is the largest movement of Przewalski's horses from Europe to Central Asia in the 15-year history of the Return of the Wild Horses project. The animals will now spend about a year at the Alibi reintroduction centre, adapting to local conditions before being released into the wild.

Przewalski's horse, the world's last remaining wild horse species, disappeared from the wild in the 1960s and survived only in zoos. Prague Zoo, which manages the species' international studbook, plans to continue the reintroduction programme in Kazakhstan in the coming years.
