Prague Zoo celebrates World Elephant Day
Prague Zoo celebrated World Elephant Day on Saturday, giving visitors a chance to learn more about the daily process of caring for the elephants and enjoy a feeding and bathing session. Two of the elephants are expecting young. Janita is expected to give birth around February next year, while Tamara two months later.
Prague Zoo currently keeps six Indian elephants: male Maxim and females Gulab, Shanti, Lakuna, Tamara and Janita. Five elephant calves have been born in Prague over the past 12 years. According to the zoo, elephant breeding changed significantly after the Elephant Valley opened in 2012, making it possible to create conditions closer to the animals’ natural way of life.
