Prague tightens security around Christmas markets in wake of Magdeburg attack

Prague City Hall had concrete barriers placed around the Christmas market on Naměstí republiky Square in response to Friday’s attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg. Police spokesman Jan Daněk told the Czech News Agency that concrete blocks will now also be placed so as to protect Prague’s embankment.  Concrete barriers have thus far only protected markets on Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square.

Speaking shortly after Friday’s attack in Magdeburg, Interior Minister Vít Rakušan assured the public that there is no imminent danger in the Czech Republic and that an increased number of officers are deployed out in the streets and around potential soft targets over the holiday season.
