Prague street called after Soviet general to be renamed after vote

A Prague street called after Red Army commander Ivan Konev is to be renamed, following a City Hall vote on Monday. The proposal had come from the Prague 3 district, which said it wanted to rename the present Koněvova St. as Hartigova, after Karel Hartig, the first mayor of the local Žižkov district.

Prague 3 said this would impact around 5,000 people, who will have six months to obtain replacement official ID cards, free of charge, once the change takes effect on October 1.

General Konev took part in the liberation of the Czech lands at the end of WWII but was also involved in the Soviets' crushing of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956.
