Post Malone’s brings heart and country to ‘Big Ass’ tour stop in Prague

American rapper, singer, songwriter Post Malone

Two days after his outing at Sziget Festival in Hungary, world music star Post Malone took the stage at Prague’s Letňany on Tuesday. The lively showman famously dabbles in a variety of genres, from hip-hop and pop, to rock and country. The latter was top of the order, dominating both the stage design and a good part of the 25-record set list.

The American singer arrived to the third European stop of his ‘Big Ass’ stadium tour one day in advance, and was spotted around the centre of Prague by fans. His wanders through the nation’s capital clearly provided the outfit for Tuesday night’s show, as he emerged on stage in jeans and a dark blue t-shirt with ‘Prague’ written on the chest.

With a cigar in hand, Post Malone kicked off the show with the spirited track ‘Texas Tea’ – a nod to the state where he grew up since the age of nine. That Southern influence also showed on the custom ‘Posty Co.’ honky-tonk-style sign beaming over the top of the stage, and a neon-light cowboy and cowgirl on either side of the podium.

Fittingly, the American singer offered a generous dose of country music, which dominates among his recent releases. Already in 2015 he confessed on Twitter that after turning 30, he will become a country/folk artist. That moment came in early July, and on his latest studio album ‘F-1 Trillion’, he indeed secured features from some of today’s foremost country singers.

Post Malone performed several records from the album on Tuesday night, including ‘Wrong Ones’, ‘Pour Me a Drink’, and most notably his latest Billboard number-one single ‘I Had Some Help’ – a collaboration with country singer Morgan Wallen. His record ‘I Ain't Comin' Back’ was the only non-original song of the evening, as Post Malone covered the track midway through the set.

Austin Richard Post, as he is known in daily life, lived up to his reputation of effectively conveying different moods and emotions through his songs. More heartfelt moments like devoting a song to his daughter, or the melancholic record ‘Feeling Whitney’ came across as genuine and sincere.

He also gave the impression of thoroughly enjoying the night. Together with the seven members of his backup band, the singer went through several red solo cups of beer and a couple cigars, which he sometimes blithely tucked behind the strums of his guitar.

Often pacing up and down the thrust stage leading into the middle of the audience, the artist did not shy away from contact with the excited crowd, many dressed in cowboy hats for the occasion.

Fans of Post Malone’s older music also got their own with chart-topping hits like ‘Circles’, ‘Rockstar’, ‘Psycho’, and ‘Sunflower’, which all came up in the second half of the show. The hip-hop enthusiasts in the crowd will also have been pleased with his choice of opening act, which featured Czech rappers Nik Tendo and Stein27, as well as DJ NobodyListen.

The night closed with the successful radio hit ‘Congratulations’ – a fitting finale and well-earned pat on the back for a dynamic performance brimming with heart and energy. The award-winning musician’s next ‘Big Ass’ tour stop is St. Pölten in Austria, before he sets off to 14 more destinations around Europe in the space of a month.
