Pope accepts resignation of Prague auxiliary bishop Václav Malý

Pope Leo XIV accepted the resignation of Prague auxiliary bishop Václav Malý on Sunday, the day he turned 75, the age at which canon law requires bishops to offer it.

During the communist era, Malý served in the underground church, spent seven months in prison, worked in Prague hotels, and became a spokesman for Charter 77. He later played a key role in the 1989 Velvet Revolution, moderating major demonstrations on Prague’s Letná Plain.

He became auxiliary bishop in 1996 and has received honors including the Order of T. G. Masaryk (Third Class) and the Arnošt Lustig Prize.
