Police to receive translated documents on Jan Masaryk’s death

Czech police are set to receive translations of key documents from foreign diplomatic and intelligence services in the coming days, which could shed light on the death of former Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk. Masaryk fell from a window in Prague’s Czernin Palace on March 10, 1948, with the official version stating it was suicide. However, newly obtained diplomatic archives from France, the US and the UK suggest otherwise, prompting the reopening of the case.

According to Dalimil Sypták, director of the Office for Documentation and Investigation of Crimes of Communism, several citizens have since come forward with their testimonies. Past investigations, including one from 2001 to 2003, leaned toward assassination but couldn't rule out suicide or accident. The last probe, closed in 2021, reached no definitive conclusion. Police now aim to compare the new evidence with previous findings to uncover the truth behind Masaryk’s death.
