PM Magyar dismisses Orbán as potential UN chief

Speaking at a press briefing in Prague, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said he did not consider his predecessor Viktor Orbán a suitable leader for the United Nations, adding that Orbán could only be a good choice if the aim were to destroy the organisation.

Magyar was responding to a report by The Wall Street Journal that US President Donald Trump’s administration supports Orbán as a candidate to become the next UN secretary-general. According to the newspaper, Washington approached Orbán with the idea and encouraged him to run for the post.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš did not comment on the matter.

The current UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, is due to leave office on December 31.
