Pilfering nests in Slovakia
A court in neighbouring Slovakia has just sentenced a Czech national to one year in jail for having pilfered the nest of a Golden eagle, a protected bird of prey which no longer nests in the Czech Republic. Although no-one had been sent to jail for it before, it is not uncommon for Czech falconers and poachers to be caught pilfering nests in the High Tatras, Slovakia's highest mountain range.
Paradoxically, the Czech Republic and Slovakia cooperate in a project called Europe against Bird Crime. In this week's Magazine, Daniela Lazarova talks to Petr Vorisek, a leading member of the Czech Ornithology Society about what is being done to stop poachers and whether it is possible to recover some of the lost species.
