People won just and lasting peace, PM Fiala says on Victory Day

Those who fought for freedom in World War II did not bow down to a dictator in order to achieve a just and lasting peace, Prime Minister Petr Fiala posted on the X network on Thursday, which is Victory Day in Czechia. Peace is never a given, wrote the leader of the opposition movement ANO, Andrej Babiš, on the same network.

Thursday's national holiday in Czechia, as in most other European countries, commemorates the end of World War II in Europe in May 1945. "They did not bow down to the dictator, they did not lay down their arms, but fought to achieve a peace that would be just and long-lasting. Peace, freedom and democracy are not self-evident – protecting them is our daily task," PM Fiala wrote, referring to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
