People surrender nearly 6,000 firearms and 64 kilograms of explosives during this year's weapons amnesty

During this year's weapons amnesty, members of the public surrendered 5,918 firearms, more than 213,000 rounds of ammunition, over 2,600 items of military ordnance, and around 64 kilograms of explosives. The only time more firearms were handed in was 17 years ago. According to Police Presidium spokeswoman Irena Brodská, the highest number of firearms was surrendered in the Central Bohemian Region and Prague, while the fewest were handed in in the Karlovy Vary Region.

This year's six-month amnesty was introduced in connection with the new Firearms Act, which came into force at the beginning of the year. Owners could either surrender their weapon or apply to have it registered, provided it had not been used in the commission of a crime and they held the appropriate authorization to possess it.
