Over 500 tonnes of food and essentials donated in national charity drive

People in Czechia donated 518 tonnes of food and hygiene products during Saturday’s national food collection, according to organisers. That’s about 10 percent more than on the equivalent day last year.

The charity event was organised by the Czech Federation of Food Banks and the Confederation of Commerce and Tourism. More than 2,500 brick-and-mortar shops took part, up from around 2,100 last spring. Donations can still be made via selected online stores until 6 May.

In total, 464 tonnes of food and 54 tonnes of toiletries were collected. Organisers say the food alone amounts to roughly 928,000 portions, which will help elderly people living alone, families in crisis, the homeless and those with disabilities.
