Onsemi cancels planned CZK43.5bn expansion in Rožnov

US semiconductor manufacturer onsemi has cancelled plans to invest 2 billion dollars in expanding its plant in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm in northeastern Moravia. The project, announced in 2024, was intended to create a complete production chain for silicon carbide chips. The company cited changing conditions on the global market for the material.

The decision will not affect existing production, onsemi said. Industry and Trade Minister Karel Havlíček said the company would continue its manufacturing and research activities in Czechia and was planning further investments in Rožnov and Brno, as well as new jobs.

Rožnov mayor Jan Kučera described the cancellation as bad news for the town, the region and the country. The company has already announced two rounds of redundancies at its Czech operations since last year, affecting around 370 employees.
