Omicron wave peaking with record number of new cases and reinfections
The Czech Republic registered 47, 220 new cases of Coronavirus on Friday, the second highest tally in 24 hours since the start of the epidemic. In addition to that it registered 8,000 reinfections.
The high number of reinfections is ascribed to the now dominant Omicron variant of the virus which more easily overcomes immunity acquired through disease or vaccination. The incidence number has reached a record high at 2,224 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The Omicron wave is believed to be peaking around the country these days and epidemiologist say the number of cases should gradually start dropping sometime next week. The government is expected to announce a time table for phasing-out the restrictive measures in mid-February.
