Omicron now makes up half of all Covid infections in Czechia, according to testing firm

The average share of the omicron variant detected in specialised laboratories in the Czech Republic has now reached 50 percent of all coronavirus cases, according to Diana Biotechnologies, the main test maker in the Czech Republic. Company CEO Václav Navrátil said that in Prague, omicron makes up around 75 percent of detected variants in some laboratories. He believes that there could be up to 200,000 new infections by the end of January.

The news, reported by website Aktuálně.cz, comes amid a steady rise in cases in the Czech Republic over recent days. Although the latest, Wednesday, numbers (7,377) show a fall in new cases compared to the previous day (10,169), they are still higher in week-on-week terms. Currently, 2,714 people infected with the virus are in hospital, of which 482 are in serious condition.
