Omicron likely to be dominant variant in Czechia in 10 days’ time

Omicron is likely to be the dominant variant of coronavirus in the Czech Republic within ten days to a fortnight, according to the State Institute of Public Health. According to experts, the Omicron wave may bring up to 50,000 new cases a day and around 7,000 Covid patients in hospitals. At the present time, Delta and its sub-variants make up 85 percent of all cases detected, while Omicron holds a 15 percent share. However, in view of the milder symptoms and shorter incubation and infection periods in the latter there are suspicions that the actual number of Omicron infections in the country may be much higher. The first case of Omicron was registered in the Czech Republic at the end of November.
