Okamura: incoming coalition agrees to reduce subcommittees

The incoming government coalition of ANO, SPD and the Motorists has agreed to cut the number of subcommittees in the lower house of parliament, according to the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and SPD leader Tomio Okamura, who announced the decision on Saturday evening on social media. The move is expected to save ten million crowns in functional allowances, he wrote.

Okamura pointed out that during the previous four-year term, the Chamber had 63 subcommittees, some of which met only three times. He did not say which ten subcommittees would be dropped to achieve the savings.

Okamura also noted that he is seeking savings by limiting MPs’ foreign travel. The new coalition has additionally put forward a proposal to freeze politicians’ salaries for five years, though it is unlikely to be passed before the end of the year.
