Number of Ukrainian refugees in Czech kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools increased year-on-year
The number of Ukrainian refugee children enrolled in Czech kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools has increased compared to last year. As of September 30, there were 53,246 such children, representing 2.8% of all students. According to the Education Ministry, most of the growth occurred in primary and secondary schools, while the number of Ukrainian pupils in preparatory primary school classes and conservatories declined. Since 2022, Ukrainians have been the largest group of foreign students in Czech regional education, with approximately 70% of them being refugees.
At the start of the school year, refugees made up the majority of Ukrainian children in the Czech education system. They accounted for 78.2% of Ukrainian pupils in primary schools, 56.1% in secondary schools, and 51.3% in kindergartens. The Ministry noted that most Ukrainian refugee children attend public schools run by regions or municipalities.
