Opposition to challenge law curbing president’s powers at Constitutional Court

The opposition plans to challenge a law pushed through by the ruling coalition that limits the president's powers. The motion to challenge the law at the Constitutional Court received backing from 53 MPs and 38 senators.

The disputed amendment transfers the authority to appoint and dismiss heads of Czech permanent missions to international organisations, including NATO and the United Nations, from the president to the foreign minister.

The opposition argues that the change interferes with the powers of the head of state in violation of the constitutioal order.

The president himself vetoed the law, but the veto was overridden by the ruling parties’ majority in the lower house.
