MPs to debate windfall tax on oil refineries

MPs are expected to hold the first reading of a government proposal to introduce an extraordinary tax on oil refineries for this and next year.

The government says the measure is justified by rising refinery margins amid developments on the global oil market. It estimates the tax could generate between 5.5 billion and nine billion crowns this year.

The opposition Civic Democrats consider the proposal controversial, warning that refineries could offset the additional costs by raising prices.

The opposition Mayors and Independent have not criticised the proposed tax, but say the government must ensure that it actually generates revenue for the state budget.
