Czechs marking Václav Havel’s 90th birth anniversary
Cultural events, public discussions and the unveiling of commemorative plaques will mark 90 years since the birth of former Czech president Václav Havel on Monday, October 5. Plaques will be unveiled in the Senate and on a house in Prague’s Dejvice district where Havel lived in the 1970s.
Memorial events have been taking place across the Czech Republic at the weekend.
On Saturday, the Memory of Nations initiative organized a march from Trutnov to Hrádeček, where Havel and his wife Olga had a country cottage. It was a frequent meeting place of the dissident circle around Havel and a place that the late president was very fond of. He died there on December 18, 2011 after a long illness.
