Czechs mark Labour Day with political rallies, festivals and gatherings

Political rallies, festivals and gatherings took place around the country within the annual May Day celebrations.

Around 500 people joined a parade through central Prague within the Prague Majáles student festival, which was held for the twentieth time this year. The event traditionally culminates with the election of the Majáles king and queen.

More than 1,000 people joined an anti-fascist rally in the city centre, which passed without serious incidents.

In Czechia the holiday is also marked as a celebration of love and the welcoming of spring.

In the western city of Plzen, May Day marked the start of the annual Freedom Festival commemorating the end of the Second World War and the liberation of the city by American troops.
