About half of Czechs believe that small amounts of alcohol are healthy

Around half of Czechs think drinking small amounts of alcohol can benefit health, often describing it as a few glasses of wine or beer. This follows from a survey by sociologists from the Faculty of Arts at Charles University involving 1,022 adult respondents.

The study found that myths about alcohol remain widespread. For example, about two-fifths believe small amounts can prevent heart disease, over 60 percent think alcohol warms the body, and about a quarter believe it improves sleep.

Researchers also found that one-third of parents with children under five think small amounts of alcohol during pregnancy are not dangerous. Doctors warn that high alcohol consumption in the Czech Republic contributes to higher rates of diseases, including cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, and liver disease.
