35,000 hens culled in Vysočina due to bird flu

The culling of a large hen farm housing around 35,000 laying hens affected by bird flu began on Monday in Habry in the Vysočina region, according to the Czech News Agency. The outbreak is the tenth case of bird flu detected this year at a commercial poultry farm in Czechia.

The hens are being moved into containers, killed using gas, and then transported to a rendering facility. The operation involves 43 firefighters and 22 prisoners, and is expected to be completed by Tuesday night.

The farm is owned by Xaverov a.s., part of the Agrotrade Group.
