Bandjeez pays tribute to David Stypka with second posthumous album Opatruj

David Stypka

Nearly five years after the untimely death of singer-songwriter David Stypka, Bandjeez, his longtime band, released a second posthumous album created from his own unfinished work and recordings. It came out on November 7, named Opatruj (Take Care).

Opatruj naturally follows Stypka’s successful trilogy Čaruj, Neboj, and Dýchej, both in theme and tone. The twelve new tracks highlight the distinctiveness of his voice and the strength of his songwriting.

From the extensive archive of unfinished tracks Stypka created while working on his album Dýchej, Bandjeez members assembled twelve previously unheard songs and completed the material together with producer Martin Ledvina.

These songs were written during preparations for Dýchej, Stypka’s third studio album, which was released in September 2021 — eight months after his death. The record later received three Anděl Awards from the Czech Music Academy: Album of the Year, Solo Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year.

In an interview with Czech Radio, Martin Červinka, the artistic director of the SinglTon label, describes the recording as “a full-fledged album by an exceptional visionary whose voice still lives on.”

Producer Martin Ledvina: “More than anything, David Stypka loved shairing his music with people. With Opatruj, we wanted to give listeners one last chance to take in every note and every word he left behind”.

In January 2026, three tribute concerts will take place at Ostrava’s Gong venue, along with two additional performances at Prague’s O2 universum. Joining Bandjeez on stage will be the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava or the Moravian Philharmonic Olomouc. Three artists who were close to Stypka both personally and professionally — Ewa Farna, Kateřina Marie Tichá, and Mirai Navrátil — will perform his songs.

March 2026 will bring the premiere of director Dan Svátek’s feature-length documentary Neboj, dýchej, čaruj dedicated to the artist.
