Czechs scored a sensational Davis Cup win in the hunt for their first title since 2013 at the weekend. The victory was sealed by rising star Jakub Menšík, who defeated U.S. Frances Tiafoe in the deciding match on Saturday.

Jakub Menšík (20) and Jiří Lehečka (23) were standout performers in the second round of the Davis Cup Qualifiers against the U.S., held in Delray Beach, Florida, on September 12-13. The two young players rank within the PIF ATP top twenty singles and have promising careers ahead. Their impressive play against U.S. number one, Taylor Fritz, and number four, Frances Tiafoe, secured Czechia’s spot among the Final Eight of the Davis Cup, with the tournament scheduled for Bologna, Italy, this November. Czech tennis players have defeated the Americans in the Davis Cup for only the second time, with their first victory dating back to 1996.

The Qualifiers featured five matches across two days and included a lengthy lightning delay. On the first day, Lehečka gave Czechia an early lead with a swift win over Tiafoe, before Fritz leveled the tie by defeating Menšík. In Saturday’s doubles, Tomáš Macháč and Menšík eventually fell to the experienced American pair Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek. Lehečka then struck again, this time beating Fritz to tie the series at 2-2. That set the stage for Menšík, who sealed the decisive victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Tiafoe in the final singles match. Czechia now has the chance to win their fourth Davis Cup title, having previously won in 2013, 2012, and 1980 (when Czech players played for Czechoslovakia).
