President Pavel expresses condolences after Lisbon cable car tragedy
President Petr Pavel has offered condolences to his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa after a cable car accident in Lisbon that claimed 17 lives. He and his wife Eva expressed sympathy to the victims’ families in a message published on the Castle’s website.
The death toll rose after two injured passengers died in hospital. Another 22 remain hospitalized, at least five in serious condition. Portuguese authorities said some of the victims were foreign nationals. The Czech foreign ministry reported no Czech citizens among the injured.
Portugal has declared a day of national mourning. Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský also expressed their condolences.
