Hidden amethysts unearthed at UNESCO-listed Kroměříž Chateau

Researchers have uncovered hundreds of amethysts more than 330 years old, at Kroměříž Chateau, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The gemstones were hidden beneath layers of mortar in the estate’s baroque artificial caves, known as grottos. The find is considered of international significance. Why the semi-precious stones were concealed and by whom remains unknown. Scholars from Palacky University, who discoverewd the gems, will now conduct further research and restoration, a process that may take up to ten years. The grottos will remain partially open to visitors during the work.
