Number of foreign nationals in Czech Republic tops 1.09 million
As of the end of June, 1,091,409 foreign nationals were legally residing in the Czech Republic, an increase of nearly 35,000 over the past year, according to the Interior Ministry’s quarterly migration report. Ukrainians make up the largest group, followed by Slovaks, Vietnamese, and Russians. Foreign nationals now account for 10.3 percent of the Czech population. More than one-third of them live in Prague.
The Interior Ministry attributes the sharp increase in the number of foreign nationals primarily to the granting of temporary protection to Ukrainian citizens fleeing the war in their country.
Over 378,000 people have registered for temporary protection, which grants access to public healthcare, education, and the labour market. As of the end of June, approximately 385,000 foreigners held permanent residency in the Czech Republic, while nearly 328,000 were living in the country on temporary permits.
