Seismographs in Czechia detect massive earthquake off Kamchatka coast

Seismographs in Czechia detected the massive earthquake off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula overnight. One of the most sensitive stations, located in Kašperské Hory, was overwhelmed by the seismic waves, director of the Czech Academy of Sciences’ Geophysical Institute, Aleš Špičák, told the Czech News Agency.

The earthquake occurred around 1:30 a.m. Czech time and since then experts have recorded dozens, possibly hundreds, of aftershocks. Czech seismographs typically register earthquakes of magnitude five or higher from distant locations. The Kamchatka earthquake was reported at magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale.
