FM Lipavský: Czechia ready for new defense commitments
At a meeting of the NATO–Ukraine Council in The Hague on Tuesday evening, NATO foreign ministers reaffirmed their enduring support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. The Czech head of diplomacy Jan Lipavský told the Czech News Agency that he welcomed the show of unity and said Czechia was prepared to meet NATO’s new defense commitments. “Our collective responsibility and shared security interest is to ensure Ukraine has everything it needs to defend its territory,” he said. “The stronger Ukraine is, the weaker Russia becomes and the less capable it is of further aggression.”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that allied military aid to Ukraine this year will exceed €35 billion. Rutte proposed increasing NATO’s defense spending target to 5% of GDP—3.5% for the military, and 1.5% for broader security needs, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, and healthcare facilities.
