“Poland will continue its pro-Western orientation,” President Pavel believes after Nawrocki’s presidential win
Czech President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala extended congratulatory wishes to Karol Nawrocki on his victory in Poland’s presidential election. Pavel expressed optimism that Poland would uphold democratic principles and maintain its pro-Western orientation under Nawrocki’s leadership.
“I congratulate Karol Nawrocki on being elected President of Poland. I believe that under his leadership, Poland will continue to strengthen its democratic and pro-Western orientation and that our countries will carry on with their mutually beneficial cooperation,” President Pavel wrote on X.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala also wrote on X, congratulating the Polish president:
“Congratulations to Nawrocki on winning the presidential election. Poland is one of our closest allies, and I firmly believe that we will continue to strengthen our relations, which are founded on solid democratic values.”
Nawrocki, the candidate backed by the opposition Law and Justice party (PiS), narrowly defeated Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski of the ruling Civic Coalition.
Election night started better for Mayor Trzaskowski. Shortly after the polls closed on Sunday evening, the first estimate gave him a slight lead over the conservative candidate.
Nawrocki was then in the lead all night in the interim count, although his lead gradually thinned. Nawrocki ended up with 10.6 million votes in the second round, while Trzaskowski received about 380,000 fewer votes. 71 percent of voters turned out for the election, marking a historic record for the country.
Polish media reported on Monday morning that after 100 percent of the precincts were counted, Nawrocki won 50.9 percent of the vote. Nawrocki is to replace PiS representative Andrzej Duda as president.
During a visit last week to the Moravian-Silesian Region, the Czech president praised the Czech-Polish relationship, adding that Duda will make a farewell visit to the country in the coming weeks:
“I must greatly appreciate the fair and constructive cooperation we had with President Duda. He will come to say goodbye in the next few weeks. I think what stands out is that we were in complete agreement on the fundamental issues of foreign and security policy.”
