President Pavel challenges treaty with Vatican

According to President Petr Pavel, the treaty between Czechia and the Vatican is in conflict with the constitutional order, while the government and the Czech Bishops' Conference defend the treaty. According to President Pavel, the treaty undermines the fundamental constitutional principles of Czechia as a sovereign, secular, and republican state. It "raises serious doubts, both in individual provisions and as a whole, regarding its compatibility with the constitutional order," the statement from the Office of the President reads.

This follows from statements received by the Constitutional Court, which have now been published on its website. These statements will serve as the basis for proceedings initiated by a group of senators. The court must assess whether the treaty is in accordance with the constitutional order, and at the government's request, it will give the case priority.
