Germany to tighten border controls, travellers from Czechia to Bavaria may be affected

Travellers from Czechia will feel the tightening of controls at German land borders when crossing into Bavaria, following a decision on Wednesday by the new Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt. This was announced by a spokesman for the Federal Police Directorate in Munich on Thursday.

According to the newspaper Die Welt, the new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has decided to declare a national emergency on migration and asylum issues. According to the newspaper, the aim of the measure is to suspend the validity of the so-called Dublin Agreement, which, among other things, stipulates that the European Union country in which a foreigner first files an asylum application is responsible for processing that application. The ambassadors of neighbouring countries, including Czechia, are now receiving detailed information about the measure.

The chancellor has long warned that his cabinet would immediately tighten the fight against illegal migration after taking office. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has assured the public that the Czech government will address any complications resulting from the tightening of controls. Representatives of industry and trade in Germany and some neighbouring countries are criticising the new border measures.
