Plzeň holds Lazio to a draw but exits Europa League

Viktoria Plzeň fell short in the Europa League round of 16, drawing 1-1 with Lazio in Rome on Thursday night. After losing the first leg 1-2 at home, the Czech side couldn’t overturn the deficit. Plzeň took the lead in the 52nd minute through Pavel Šulc, but Lazio equalized in the 77th minute when Alessio Romagnoli scored from a corner.

This marks Plzeň’s fourth unsuccessful attempt to reach the Europa League quarterfinals. The club also fell short of last season’s best-ever European run, when it reached the Conference League quarterfinals. With Plzeň’s exit, no Czech team remains in European competitions this season.
