Bison population in Czechia grows, but fewer calves born
The European bison population in Czechia grew to 164 last year, up by five from 2022. However, only 21 calves were born, fewer than in the previous two years.
The largest herd, with 44 bison, roams the large ungulate reserve near Milovice, Central Bohemia. Another major group of 43 bison lives in the Židlov reserve in the Liberec region.
According to the Czech Landscape Society and the Czech Academy of Sciences, the country’s bison population has steadily increased since hitting a low of 36 in 2010.
