Czech PM and President agree on need to increase defence spending to 3% of GDP

Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President Petr Pavel have agreed on the need to increase defence spending. Following their meeting at Prague Castle on Thursday, Mr. Fiala highlighted their shared stance, emphasizing the goal of reaching at least 3% of GDP in the coming years. He described this as both a crucial investment in security and an opportunity to boost the economy.

Earlier this week, the Czech Prime Minister suggested a gradual annual increase of 0.2% of GDP. NATO leaders committed to spending at least 2% of GDP on defence at the 2014 Wales Summit, a target met by 23 of 32 member countries last year.

The two politicians also met last week to discuss the Ukraine war, official salaries, and military matters. Today’s talks focused on international and security issues.
