Today marks 100 years since the death of painter Jakub Schikaneder, considered one of the most important Czech painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best known for his melancholic paintings of Prague in the evening and dusk.

Jakub Schikaneder is renowned for his gentle outdoor scenes, often imbued with a sense of solitude. His work frequently portrays marginalized and impoverished figures, blending neo-romantic and naturalist influences.

He favored themes like autumn and winter, Prague's quiet corners and alleyways, and the misty banks of the Vltava River, often depicted in the soft light of early evening. His first notable piece, the large-scale Repentance of the Lollards (2.5m × 4m), is now lost.

From May 1998 to January 1999, the National Gallery in Prague showcased an exhibition of his works.
