Šumava National Park to enable controlled shooting of wolves

The Šumava National Park will enable controlled shooting of wolves on its territory should the need arise, Jan Dvořák, spokesman for the Šumava National Park, informed journalists. However this could only be done by authorized hunters under strict conditions, such as if the wolves lose their shyness and become dangerous to humans. A contingency plan issued by the Ministry of the Environment determines the exact procedure for keeping problematic wolves in check. They could be monitored, scared off, trapped or even shot in extreme situations. Monitoring shows that there are now eight wolf packs living in Šumava. The low-end estimate is 30 wolves, including cubs.
