World’s longest tram produced by Czechia’s Škoda Group to hit the tracks in Germany
The longest tram in the world, produced by Czechia’s Škoda Group, is set to go into operation in the German Rhine-Neckar region in the south-west of the country. Measuring nearly 60 meters, the tram features a unique modular design, which allows it to be shortened and lengthened like a train.
The giant tram, produced in Škoda Group’s factory in Plzeň, measures exactly 58.61 metres and can accommodate 368 passengers, including 144 seated. What makes it truly unique is its modular design, which allows its 30-metre section to be separated for easier parking in the depot.
The world’s longest tram is part of a package order that includes the production of 114 trams for the German public transport operator NRV. Škoda secured the contract six years ago, originally agreeing to produce 80 trams for nearly 280 million euros, with an option to supply 34 more. The entire delivery is set to be completed by the end of 2026.
The trams are designed to serve as metropolitan trains connecting the cities of Manheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg in the Rhine-Neckar region. They are produced in Škoda Group’s factory in Plzeň and in Otanmäki, Finland.
